ATP Tennis- Andy Murray Wins Rogers Cup after Beating del Potro

After defeating Jo-Wildried Tsonga in the Rogers Cup semifinals on Saturday, the Scottish Andy Murray faced Juan Martin del Potro in the final. Both players had a strong game but in the end the Scot defeated the Argentine 6-7, 7-6, 6-1. The title was the fifth for Murray, who, with 50 wins, is having a great year. The victory also moved him up to No. 2 in world rankings, surpassing Rafael Nadal. With his fifth tournament win of the year, Murray has improved his record to 11-4 against the top ten players this season. During the first set, neither of the players could break the other’s serve, taking the set to a tiebreaker. Del Potro was better and stronger off the ground than Murray, who, even after two aces, couldn’t take the tiebreak and lost 6-7. As the match continued, however, the incessant heat wore away at both players, especially the Argentine, who looked exhausted by the second and third sets. It was in the second set that Murray began breaking del Potro’s serves; the Argentine, however, returned the favor during the second game, and the set went to a second tiebreak. This time, del Potro seemed overheated and tired, calling his trainer to check a painful shoulder. In the end, Murray won the tiebreak 7-3, tying the match with one set apiece. During the third set, the heat finally overtook del Potro. He seemed about to retire, but ultimately battled to the end, even though he lost his serve several times. Murray broke del Potro’s serve easily and at the same time improved his own serve. After only 25 minutes – the first two sets had required 2 hours and 17 minutes – Murray won the third set, finishing 6-1 and obtaining his 5th title of the year. At a press conference after the match, del Potro said that the mixture of playing nine difficult matches in 13 days, a shoulder injury, and the heat was too much for him. On the other hand, the Scotsman expressed his happiness at getting into the No.2 spot and winning his 5th title of the year. “I love winning tournaments. It’s great. In terms of rankings it is the biggest step I’ve made so far. I played consistently well this year, so bar winning a (Grand) Slam, I’ve done enough to justify being No. 2, and getting closer to hopefully one day becoming No. 1 is one of my goals. I’ve put in a lot of hard work to get to this stage, and I keep working hard to go one step farther,” Murray said. With this title, Murray is confident that he will do well in Cincinnati, where he will prepare for the US Open on August 31st.
